Veterinarians at Texas A&M’s Large Animal Teaching Hospital (LATH) successfully treated King Louie, a 1-year-old KuneKune pig, diagnosed with erysipelas, or “diamond skin disease.” Initially lethargic and feverish, Louie was admitted to intensive care, where tests revealed a severe bacterial bloodstream infection. Early and aggressive antibiotic therapy saved Louie from potential organ failure and death.

Erysipelas is common in swine but also affects other animals and occasionally humans in close contact with infected species. It can cause high fever, joint pain, and distinctive skin lesions. Diagnosis involves clinical signs, bacterial cultures, and advanced testing. While vaccination is preferred for prevention, prompt penicillin-based treatment is effective in acute cases. Louie’s recovery involved 24-hour care and personalized updates, highlighting LATH’s dedication. Now fully recovered, Louie is reunited with his brother, Lord Farquad, resuming their happy lives. His story underscores the importance of early intervention and expert Veterinary care.
