In light of the growing obesity epidemic in pets, particularly in the U.S., researchers are exploring probiotics as a potential aid for managing obesity in dogs. A 2022 study highlighted that over half of cats and dogs are overweight or obese. To address this, scientists investigated two specific probiotics, Enterococcus faecium IDCC 2102 and Bifidobacterium lactis IDCC 4301, which showed promising results in dogs on high-fat diets.

These probiotics positively affected gut microbiota, enhanced energy utilization, and helped regulate hormone and neurotransmitter production, ultimately reducing weight gain and systemic inflammation. In addition, E. faecium IDCC 2102 increased dopamine synthesis, potentially helping with overeating behaviors in dogs. While these probiotics could be incorporated into pet food for weight control, further studies are needed to fully understand their impact and potential for broader use in managing obesity-related health issues in pets.
