The Valencia Library in California hosts a monthly “Read to a Dog” event, offering children from kindergarten to sixth grade a judgment-free zone to practice reading skills with certified therapy dogs and Glory the Parrot, a certified therapy bird. The program aims to encourage shy children to feel comfortable reading to furry friends, fostering a positive reading experience.

Participants read up to three books to different therapy animals, including dogs and the parrot, helping improve pronunciation and vowel skills. The animals, accompanied by their owners, offer a non-intimidating audience for the children. The program, held at multiple library branches, has been well-received for several years, bringing joy to both participants and therapy animal owners.
