An Iowa hatchery has introduced Cheggy, the first automated, non-invasive in-ovo sex-determining machine in the U.S., revolutionizing the egg production industry. Another machine is operational in Texas, and eggs from in-ovo sexed hens are expected in the market by June 2025 through NestFresh Eggs. Developed by Germany’s Agri Advanced Technologies (AAT), Cheggy uses hyperspectral measurement technology to identify chick gender before hatching by analyzing light spectra differences. This sustainable and efficient system eliminates contamination risks, producing no waste while seamlessly integrating into production lines. With the capacity to sort up to 25,000 eggs per hour, Cheggy significantly increases productivity.
The technology addresses the long-standing issue of male chick culling in egg production, aligning with growing demand for humane and sustainable practices. Industry leaders celebrated its U.S. debut on December 10, highlighting its potential to transform the sector. NestFresh Eggs leads implementation, reinforcing its commitment to ethical and innovative egg production.
