Shortly after posting, the U.S. CDC revised dog importation requirements, rendering this information historical. Updated information was posted on July 22, 2024. The FAQs, compiled with CVMA and CFIA, address key points about the rules. Exceptions or exemptions must be requested directly from the CDC, primarily for necessary veterinary care. While the finalization of rules is ongoing, current guidelines should be followed.

Non-ISO microchips should be replaced with ISO-certified ones. Rabies vaccination must be performed in Canada with licensed vaccines, following specific guidelines for primary and booster doses. Overdue boosters are considered primary doses, requiring a 28-day wait before travel. Vaccines given before microchipping are not valid for U.S. entry. Records from 6-12 months prior to travel are required, and new patients without records must establish new ones. Dogs recently moved to Canada must reside there for six months before traveling to the US. Rabies antibody titres are not accepted. The export form must be in English.
