The Mercer Veterinary Clinic is spreading holiday cheer by assembling pet baskets containing warm coats, toys, and treats for the pets of individuals experiencing homelessness. Set to take place on December 9 at the Loaves and Fishes campus in Sacramento, the annual event will provide essential supplies and gifts for dogs and cats, including over 500 pet sweaters and coats to help them endure the winter weather.

As many homeless shelters don’t allow pets inside, these garments are crucial for protecting the animals from the cold, rain, and fog. The Mercer Clinic Pets of the Homeless, led by CEO Laurel Gershwin, collaborates with UC Davis Veterinary Students and volunteer veterinarians to offer free monthly services, including exams, vaccines, and medical care for these cherished pets. Seeking donations for their Pet Basket program and ongoing services, the clinic aims to make the holidays brighter for those struggling to care for their animal companions.
