Three researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) received seed funding from the Comparative Cancer Biology Program for their cancer research. Funded by the Sandra Atlas Bass Endowment, these awards support pilot projects in cancer biology. Dr. Brian Rudd’s project, “Developmental layering: A new model of tumor immunity,” explores why some CD8+ T cells eliminate tumors while others become exhausted.
Rudd and Dr. Anushka Dongre hypothesize that T cell responses are pre-programmed by their developmental stage. Dr. Robert Weiss and Ph.D. student Michelle Liu’s project, “Determining the Role of the miR290-295 Cluster in Testicular Germ Cell Tumor Progression,” investigates the role of microRNAs in testicular cancer, using a mouse model to study their influence on cancer growth. Dr. Andrew White’s research examines programmed cell death as an anti-tumor mechanism. These grants help researchers generate preliminary data to compete for external funding, particularly supporting junior faculty and new cancer researchers.
