The Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine’s (TTUSVM) Community and Regional Engagement Service (CARES) mobile Veterinary unit collaborates with Meals on Wheels to provide free pet services to underserved communities in the Texas Panhandle. Funded by the Amarillo Area Foundation, the $250,000 unit features anesthesia equipment, a surgery suite, a generator, and diagnostic tools.

John Dascanio, TTUSVM’s senior associate dean, emphasized the unit’s role in offering Veterinary care to those who cannot afford it and in disaster response. This initiative benefits students by offering practical experience and the community by maintaining pet and owner health. The unit aims to serve 80 clients annually, enhancing pet immunizations and health. Future plans include expanding with a truck and trailer for more animal housing. Meals on Wheels executive director Susie Akers highlighted the positive impact on homebound clients and their pets, emphasizing the unit’s role in enabling pet care without separating pets from their owners.
