A survey by the American Psychiatric Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association found that 84% of pet owners reported a positive impact on their mental health from their pets. For two-thirds of respondents, the companionship offered by pets was crucial to maintaining a positive mindset.
Dr. Howard Liu, a psychiatrist and chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s Council on Communications, highlights the unique benefits of feline companionship for people dealing with anxiety, depression, autism spectrum disorder, and trauma. Cats can help reduce stress and promote relaxation, making them a valuable source of social support, especially for those struggling with mental health challenges.
