A study using data from over 43,000 U.S. dogs enrolled in the Dog Aging Project (DAP) reveals that nearly all pet dogs experience at least one moderate to serious behavioral issue, with many showing multiple problems. Unlike smaller or selective studies, this large-scale owner-reported dataset offers a more accurate national snapshot of canine behavior. The most common issues include separation and attachment behaviors (85.9%), aggression (55.6%), fear and anxiety (49.9%), and housesoiling (4.1%).
Additional problems such as persistent barking, eating feces, and escaping were also reported at significant rates. Most earlier studies used limited samples or clinic-based populations, which skewed prevalence data. The DAP’s comprehensive approach—covering behavior, health, diet, environment, and demographics—offers new insight into the scale and severity of canine behavioral challenges in everyday homes. Despite the high prevalence, these issues are often unrecognized or unreported during veterinary visits, suggesting an urgent need for more proactive behavioral assessment and support.
