Thrive Pet Healthcare, the owner of over 400 Veterinary practices across the U.S., plans to close Veterinary Specialists Emergency Services in Rochester, New York, by November 27, leading to 132 staff layoffs. The news comes amid contract negotiations with the hospital’s support staff union. This marks the third hospital to close mid-labor negotiations in the past three years, following VCA San Francisco Veterinary Specialists and BluePearl Pet Hospital in North Seattle.

In addition, the union at a Buffalo, New York-area hospital withdrew its representation in mid-July, just a year after voting to join. Veterinary staff unions have formed in multiple hospitals since 2018, seeking improved working conditions, compensation, and benefits.
