The University of Minnesota is launching the One Health Clinic pilot program to integrate human and animal healthcare under one roof. Funded by a three-year grant, the initiative is a collaboration between the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine and College of Medicine, aiming to provide medical care for pets and their families simultaneously, particularly those in vulnerable situations.
Dean Laura Molgaard emphasized the program’s dual benefits: enhancing professional education through interprofessional collaboration and addressing the healthcare needs of underserved communities. Many people, especially those unhoused or uninsured, often prioritize their pets’ care over their own. By offering a unified clinic, the program seeks to bridge this gap, encouraging individuals to seek care for themselves while ensuring their pets are attended to. The clinic, guided by a community board, will finalize its setup within six months and begin operations next year. It plans to assist families facing complex challenges, including housing and food insecurity.
