When Sue Gelsomino’s dog Ugo, a 12-year-old Cirneco dell’Etna, progressed to congestive heart failure in mid-2023, she sought advanced treatment. Initial evaluations ruled him out for a less invasive procedure, but he was deemed a candidate for surgical mitral valve repair under Dr. Katsuhiro Matsuura at the University of Florida’s newly launched open-heart surgery program.

The complex procedure, performed in October 2023, was successful, and Ugo began a steady recovery, showing significant improvement in heart function, energy, and overall health. By November, follow-ups indicated Ugo’s cardiac measurements were normal, and he no longer required heart medications or activity restrictions. One year post-surgery, Ugo, now 13.5, continues to thrive. Gelsomino praises the medical team for their expertise and support throughout the journey, highlighting that while the surgery is life-saving, it requires commitment, resources, and careful consideration of the pet’s health and temperament. Ugo’s case underscores the potential of advanced Veterinary cardiac care.
