An underweight baby gray seal was rescued in New Haven, Connecticut, after being found 1,000 feet from the nearest river, near Yale University. A passerby reported the animal, and New Haven police officers stayed with it until it could be transported to Mystic Aquarium for rehabilitation.

Believed to be five to six weeks old, the seal had been seen by aquarium staff twice before and relocated to a beach, but instinctively made its way back to the city, likely avoiding other seals. Aquarium staff are now feeding and caring for the seal to help it reach an ideal weight for release. Gray seals are common in the North Atlantic, typically feeding on fish, crustaceans, and squid. Once healthy, the seal will be released in a safe coastal location. The rescue highlights efforts to protect marine wildlife and the importance of rehabilitation programs for stranded animals.
