The USDA announced initiatives to promote fair competition in American agriculture, aiming to lower food prices for consumers in line with President Biden’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition. Key actions include a three-part seed competition strategy, improving patent disclosures, guiding USDA researchers, and encouraging germplasm sharing for research. In addition, an interim report on the meat retail industry, focusing on beef markets, highlights increasing market concentration and concerns about intermediary practices affecting farmers and small processors.

The USDA also launched the Cattle Price Discovery Initiative to improve pricing transparency and address the negative effects of Alternative Marketing Agreements (AMAs). These efforts aim to open markets, support small businesses, and ensure fairness in the agricultural sector. The USDA will continue investigations and seek public input to address potential violations of the Packers and Stockyards Act.
