A Fresno County teacher, 60-year-old Leah Seneng, has died from rabies, believed to be contracted from a bat encounter in Merced County. Seneng, an art teacher at Bryant Middle School in Dos Palos, was described by her friend Laura Splotch as a kind, adventurous individual with a deep love for life and the arts. In mid-October, Seneng found a bat in her classroom and attempted to remove it, not realizing the potential danger. Though she displayed no symptoms initially, she fell ill a month later, was hospitalized, and placed in a coma. She passed away on November 22nd.
Health officials state there is no public threat, and preventive vaccines have been administered to healthcare workers and close contacts. The incident underscores the risks of rabies exposure from wildlife. A GoFundMe account has been created to support Seneng’s family as they mourn the loss of a beloved teacher and artist.
