Keeping pets active and managing their diet during winter is essential for their long-term health. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) notes that pet owners often skip preventative vet visits during extreme cold, which should be corrected when safe.
Local veterinarian Dr. Kyle Ripperger recommends indoor exercises like playing ball or walking laps inside to keep pets active. He also advises cutting back on extra treats during periods of reduced activity. While short outdoor trips are fine in extreme cold, dogs should only stay outside briefly when temperatures are below 20°F. In single digits, just a quick bathroom break is recommended.
Diet adjustments should be minimal to prevent digestive issues, but calorie-dense canned food can be reduced to avoid winter weight gain. Other winter care tips include providing a warm indoor space, protecting paws, monitoring dry skin, and avoiding ice. Pet owners should also keep pets away from space heaters and toxic plants.
