The AVMA Veterinary First Responder Certificate Program ensures veterinarians and Veterinary students are prepared to respond effectively to disasters. The program outlines core competencies required for participants, such as personal preparedness, understanding roles in disaster response, and knowledge of biosecurity, animal welfare, and disease management. To earn the certificate, participants must complete approved courses, including FEMA online courses and specialized programs offered by various Veterinary schools.

The certificate verifies that recipients are equipped to serve as first responders, aiding national, state, and local Veterinary response teams. Upon completing the required courses and competencies, participants submit proof to AVMA reviewers. Once all requirements are met, they receive a certificate and are added to the AVMA registry of certified Veterinary first responders. This program is supported by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and aims to enhance disaster readiness among Veterinary professionals.
