The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine is planning a significant renovation and expansion of its 37-year-old Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The university’s governing board has approved $4.3 million for design work, with the overall project size dependent on a $9 million fundraising campaign. The expansion aims to add up to 42,000 square feet to the facility, improving patient care and the environment for faculty, staff, and students.
The hospital, built in 1987, handles over 13,000 dogs and cats and cares for 1,900 pets overnight annually, but space has become a challenge as medical services have advanced. Additional board approval is needed before construction can start, with plans to break ground in about two years. The college, a collaboration between Virginia Tech and the University of Maryland, seeks to modernize its teaching hospital to maintain its standards in Veterinary education and care.
