The Wake County Animal Center in Raleigh, N.C., is temporarily closing for at least 30 days due to an outbreak of Streptococcus zooepidemicus (Strep zoo), a contagious respiratory illness in dogs. Three dogs at the shelter have died from the disease, prompting officials to take immediate action to contain the outbreak.

During the closure, pet adoptions and animal surrenders are paused, and animal control services will only respond to emergencies. Lost pet recovery will continue by appointment, but rabies and microchip clinics have been canceled. Strep zoo spreads easily in shelter environments and can severely affect even healthy, vaccinated dogs. Symptoms include fever, coughing, nasal discharge, and blood in vomit or urine. Pet owners are urged to contact their vet if symptoms appear and avoid exposing other dogs.

Veterinarian April Gessner reassures that no widespread outbreak exists, but dog owners should remain cautious and monitor their pets’ health.
