A rare “super pod” of over 1,500 Risso’s dolphins was filmed in Carmel Bay, off California’s central coast. Captain Evan Brodsky of Monterey Bay Whale Watch captured drone footage of the unusual event, as Risso’s dolphins typically travel in much smaller groups of 10 to 30. The dolphins, with their stocky bodies and bulbous heads, were seen leaping, tail-slapping, and bow riding alongside a whale-watching team initially searching for Gray whales.
Marine biologist Colleen Talty described the sight as “amazing,” noting the mix of adult and juvenile dolphins likely resulted from several pods joining together. The dolphins appeared playful and curious, even swimming close to the boat. The Monterey coastline’s deep underwater canyon attracts these deep-water-preferring dolphins closer to shore. While not the first sighting of such a large group, it remains an uncommon and awe-inspiring occurrence, leaving the team mesmerized by the dolphins’ energetic display.
