The governments of Mexico and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate on preventing and controlling the cattle screwworm (GBG) in North America. Both nations aim to protect food production and facilitate trade through joint actions and rapid response strategies in the event of an incursion. Mexico’s Minister of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, and the U.S. Deputy Minister for Marketing and Regulatory Programs, Jennifer Moffitt, emphasized their long-standing partnership of over 70 years, grounded in scientific collaboration. Mexico has been implementing a prevention strategy along its southeastern border to halt the pest’s entry.

Moffitt noted that modern technologies and the expertise of specialists in both countries offer advanced tools for eradication efforts, building on successful programs that pushed the pest’s presence southward to the Panama-Colombia border. This partnership exemplifies regional cooperation in strengthening food security across the Americas while utilizing innovative approaches to tackle agricultural threats.
