Animal shelters and zoos across the U.S. are offering unique anti-Valentine’s Day fundraisers, allowing people to symbolically get revenge on their exes while supporting a cause. Options include naming feral cats before they are neutered, or naming cockroaches and rodents after former lovers before feeding them to larger animals. One participant, Teri Scott from Washington, paid $100 to name a frozen rat after her ex, which was then fed to a raptor at Alaska’s Bird Treatment and Learning Center. The fundraiser raised over $18,000 for bird rehabilitation.
Other zoos, like the Memphis Zoo, offer humorous alternatives such as naming a mealworm after an ex for $10 or receiving a video of an elephant pooping with the message “Scent with Love.” These darkly humorous campaigns provide people with a cathartic way to move on while supporting wildlife care. Many participants enjoy sharing the experience with friends for added amusement.
