February is National Pet Dental Health Month, highlighting the importance of oral care for pets. According to Dr. Naomi Hoyer, a board-certified Veterinary dentist at Colorado State University, more than 80% of dogs and cats will develop some form of dental disease during their lives. In small dogs especially, advanced periodontal disease can damage jawbones and even result in fractures. Because oral health affects overall health, preventive care is essential. Dr. Hoyer recommends getting puppies and kittens accustomed early to having their mouths handled, just as owners do with nail trimming and grooming. Early prevention and routine dental care can help pets live healthier, more comfortable lives.
