A new study reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) can detect heart murmurs in dogs with 90% accuracy, matching the diagnostic capability of expert cardiologists. Conducted by researchers from the University of Cambridge, the AI was adapted from a database of human heart sounds, as mammalian hearts share similarities in function and disease patterns. The AI was tested on nearly 800 dogs during routine heart exams at four UK Veterinary clinics and was found to agree with cardiologist assessments in over half of the cases.

Early detection is vital, as heart murmurs indicate heart valve disease, common in older anda small-breed dogs. Timely treatment can significantly extend a dog’s life. Researchers emphasize the tool’s potential to assist vets, especially those without advanced stethoscope skills, in making informed treatment decisions. The study, published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, highlights AI as a supportive tool to improve Veterinary care.
