The Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) application process has undergone major modifications to streamline licensing. Changes include allowing students in AVMA- and CVMA-accredited programs to take the exam in their final semester, increasing exam windows from three to four annually, and providing an open application process. These updates aim to reduce the time from graduation to licensure, enabling veterinary technicians to enter the workforce sooner.

The AAVSB now also reviews eligibility for on-the-job-trained (OJT) candidates based on jurisdiction requirements but has not expanded alternate pathways. While these changes improve accessibility, some organizations, such as NAVTA and AVTE, have concerns about preparedness and maintaining credentialing standards.

AVTE has advocated for additional testing windows to avoid early testing pressures on students. While some concerns remain unresolved, stakeholders agree that ongoing data-driven evaluations will be necessary to determine the long-term success of these changes and ensure quality Veterinary technician education and licensing.
