Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Edward R. Murrow College of Communication have partnered to train Veterinary and journalism students to communicate effectively during infectious disease outbreaks. Through the 34-year-old Diagnostic Challenge simulation, second-year Veterinary students practice client interactions while journalism students learn to collaborate with scientific sources. The program teaches journalists to build relationships with veterinarians to promote education and reduce public panic, while veterinarians gain confidence engaging with the media.
Former participant Lauren Rendahl (‘25 Journalism), now at The Seattle Times, said the experience provided valuable insight into interprofessional collaboration and the importance of accurate reporting on animal health issues. Professors Wendy Raney and Jeff Abbott emphasize that the initiative builds trust between science and the public, strengthens communication during crises, and highlights that both journalists and veterinarians share a commitment to serving and protecting communities through credible, informed storytelling
