The second installment of the PetSmart Charities–Gallup State of Pet Care Study finds that the rising cost of Veterinary care continues to significantly limit access to treatment for pets, straining both pet families and veterinarians. Nearly all veterinarians report that clients’ financial constraints often prevent them from providing recommended care, with cost cited as the most common reason treatments are declined. The study reveals a major disconnect in perceptions: while most veterinarians believe they offer alternative treatment plans or financing options, far fewer pet parents report being presented with these choices.
Compounding the issue, many veterinarians say they received little to no formal training on discussing financial barriers with clients. These affordability challenges take an emotional toll, with veterinarians frequently witnessing pet health decline or facing euthanasia due to cost. Although most veterinarians are familiar with the Spectrum of Care approach, only about half regularly apply it. The study calls for better communication, training, and systemic collaboration to expand affordable, compassionate Veterinary care.
