An earthquake struck Great Falls, Montana on Thursday afternoon, creating a tense and unusual situation inside a local Veterinary clinic. The 4.2-magnitude quake occurred at 12:41 p.m. and was centered about 4.9 miles northeast of the city. While many residents paused or sought safety, the staff at Associated Veterinary Services could not stop what they were doing.
Veterinarian Dr. Emma Law and her team were performing surgery on a dog that was under anesthesia when the shaking began. As the operating table moved, the team’s immediate concern was keeping the animal from falling and being injured. Dr. Law explained that anesthetized patients cannot protect themselves and face serious risk if they fall. Veterinary technician Fiona O’Day reacted instinctively by covering the dog with her body and stabilizing her throughout the quake. The team remained focused on patient safety until the shaking stopped.
