A 3-year-old mixed-breed rabbit named Tyler was saved after undergoing emergency surgery at the UC Davis Veterinary hospital for a life-threatening condition called caudate liver lobe torsion. His owner, Lexi Parrish, quickly recognized signs of pain and rushed him for specialized care. Exotics veterinarians found Tyler had no gut sounds and was highly sensitive to touch. Diagnostic imaging revealed that part of his liver had twisted, cutting off blood supply and causing internal bleeding, liver damage, and abnormal blood values.
Because liver lobe torsion is a medical emergency in rabbits, Tyler was taken immediately into surgery to remove the affected lobe. He remained hospitalized for four days, receiving fluids, pain control, antibiotics, and close monitoring. Thanks to prompt diagnosis, advanced imaging, skilled surgery, and attentive postoperative care, Tyler recovered well. Two months later, he has returned to his normal, spirited self with no complications.
