French farmers launched widespread protests after authorities ordered the culling of cattle following confirmed cases of nodular dermatitis, also known as lumpy skin disease. Demonstrations were concentrated in southwestern France, where farmers opposed plans to kill roughly 200 infected cows at a farm in Bordes-sur-Arize. Protesters blocked access to the site for several days, leading to clashes with gendarmes who used tear gas to disperse hundreds of demonstrators and briefly detained four people.
Despite resistance, Veterinary services, accompanied by police, proceeded with the cull on Friday. Additional protests erupted across southern France, including motorway blockades and demonstrations outside public buildings aimed at preventing further cattle destruction. In Bordeaux, farmers dumped agricultural waste near multiple locations, while another large protest formed near a farm in the Hautes-Pyrenees facing additional culling. The Confederation Paysanne union called for nationwide blockades, while the prime minister defended the action, stating vaccination is ineffective once animals are infected.
