A rabid skunk attacked a dog named Hagrid in the Forestdale Subdivision of Lynchburg, Virginia, over the weekend. The Virginia Department of Health confirmed that the skunk tested positive for rabies. Hagrid’s owner, Mary Dietrich, heard barking and discovered the skunk biting her 13-year-old dog’s hind legs and tail. In an effort to save Hagrid, Dietrich fought off the skunk using a stick and a garden hoe, ultimately killing it.

Despite being up-to-date on vaccinations, Hagrid suffered severe injuries, losing mobility in his hind legs and refusing food and medication. By Tuesday, Dietrich made the difficult decision to euthanize him due to his declining condition. Animal Control collected the skunk’s body for rabies testing. Dietrich, heartbroken over the loss of her “gentle giant,” hopes to raise awareness among her neighbors to keep pets and children safe. Authorities have assured the community that there is no ongoing risk.
