Somerville, Massachusetts, has elected its first-ever dog mayor, a 10½-year-old rescue named Jake the Dog. Organized by local pet store Scritches & Boops, the lighthearted election featured 40 canine candidates, each campaigning on issues important to Somerville’s vibrant dog community. Jake’s strong local ties, built over a decade of walks, vet visits, and bakery stops, helped secure his victory after six weeks of grassroots campaigning.
His platform focused on more dog-friendly spaces, better access to treats, and promoting pet adoption. Jake and his owner, Shani Leichter, plan to use his “mayorship” to support local animal welfare, fundraise for the Somerville Animal Food Pantry, and collect toys for shelters. Jake has also formed a “cabinet” of fellow dogs to champion causes like diversity and pest control. Leichter says the race brought joy and unity to the community, reflecting Somerville’s civic spirit, human and canine alike.
