A new study highlights a tragic rise in accidental poisonings of pet dogs and cats by cocaine and methamphetamine left out in their owners’ homes. From 2019 to 2023, 433 dogs and 63 cats were reported poisoned, with meth more commonly affecting dogs (58% of cases) and cocaine prevalent among cats (65%). The American West and South experienced the highest incidents, with cocaine poisoning increasing significantly over the study period.
Led by Orrin Ware of the University of North Carolina, researchers emphasize that even minimal exposure poses a high risk of toxicity and death for pets without prompt medical intervention. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, underscores how human substance abuse extends to harm pets, vital members of households providing emotional support. Pet owners are urged to recognize the risks and safeguard their environments. For emergencies, contact the Pet Poison Helpline immediately.
