A study published in Advanced Science reveals that dogs and humans experience neural synchrony, or interbrain coupling, during friendly interactions, a phenomenon previously observed only within humans. Using electroencephalography (EEG), researchers measured brain activity in human-dog pairs over multiple days and found that interbrain coupling increased as familiarity grew, particularly during mutual gazing and petting. This synchronization reflects the deep social bond between humans and dogs, shaped over thousands of years of domestication.

The study also explored interbrain coupling in dogs genetically modified to carry a variation associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), finding it weaker than in normal dogs. Researchers tested the psychedelic drug LSD to enhance interbrain coupling in these modified dogs, observing some improvement. Although regulatory hurdles exist, the findings suggest potential for non-hallucinogenic drug analogs to treat ASD. The study highlights the unique human-dog connection and proposes further research into therapeutic applications for autism.
