Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences has received a $6 million state grant to establish the Animal Diagnostic Lab-West at Penn State Beaver in Monaca, expanding the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System. The new facility will enhance animal health, food safety, and agricultural support across western Pennsylvania.

Funded through the Shapiro Administration’s 2024-25 budget, the lab will provide diagnostic testing for diseases like avian influenza and equine infectious anemia, while also investing in necropsy services. It will work alongside existing state labs in University ParkHarrisburg, and Kennett Square.

The lab will also offer educational opportunities for Penn State Beaver students, giving hands-on experience in animal health and diagnostics. Plans include workshops and continuing education programs for veterinarians and farmers. Opening in phases from 2025 to 2027, the facility represents a major investment in Pennsylvania agriculture, strengthening disease surveillance and ensuring a safe, competitive food supply.
