As wildfires in Los Angeles County subside, evacuees are reuniting with their pets, thanks to shelters like the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (SPCALA). May Wong, displaced by the Eaton Fire, was separated from her cat Nico and parrot Ducky for nearly a week before reuniting with them. SPCALA housed 50-60 pets during the crisis, providing a temporary refuge for animals when other facilities reached capacity.
SPCALA Vice President Miriam Davenport noted that many pets have been reunited, creating space for others still in need. Wong, now back home and preparing for her pets’ safe return, expressed gratitude while recounting the tough decisions evacuees faced to protect their animals. For ongoing assistance, SPCALA offers limited space for pets and resources to help pet owners reconnect with their animals. The organization continues to play a vital role in supporting both pets and their owners during recovery efforts.
