A new study published in PLOS One suggests that playing with a dog for just 15 minutes can significantly reduce stress levels. Researchers at Chiang Mai University in Thailand found that students who interacted with friendly dogs reported a 33.5% decrease in stress, along with lower heart rates and reduced cortisol levels. The study involved 122 university students and six dogs, including five chihuahuas and a Shetland sheepdog. None of the dogs were certified therapy animals.

The research also showed benefits for the dogs, as their fecal cortisol levels dropped a week after interacting with humans. The study suggests that even non-certified dogs can provide mental health benefits, making pet-assisted interventions more accessible. These findings highlight the positive impact of human-dog interactions on stress and mental well-being. The researchers emphasize the importance of considering both human and animal well-being in such interventions.
