The City of Las Vegas is set to reconsider a ban on retail pet sales, nearly a decade after first attempting to end the practice. A new ordinance sponsored by Mayor Shelley Berkley and Councilwoman Nancy Brune would prohibit sales in new pet stores while giving existing shops three years to transition before the ban takes full effect. The proposal aims to curb the supply chain from inhumane puppy mills, a concern voiced by advocates such as Humane World for Animals and the Animal Foundation, which shelters over 800 animals and euthanized more than 3,000 last year due to overcrowding.
Opponents, including the Pet Advocacy Network, argue that such bans fail to stop illegal sales, citing California’s experience with online brokers after its 2019 ban. Despite differing views, supporters stress the ordinance is a critical step toward reducing overpopulation and promoting adoption. The City Council will review the measure on November 5.
