At Deer Valley Ski Resort, avalanche rescue dogs play a crucial role in search-and-rescue operations, offering a lifeline for buried victims. These highly trained dogs, owned by their handlers, can quickly detect human scent, making them valuable when time is critical.
The resort has four rescue dogs, including MaggieTingo, and Rooster, who undergo rigorous training through Wasatch Backcountry Search and Rescue. Their keen sense of smell allows them to locate victims buried deep under snow, barking persistently to alert rescuers. The dogs also assist in recovery efforts, providing closure to families when rescues are no longer possible. Handlers emphasize breed selection and training, ensuring dogs have the drive and focus necessary for success. With only 15 minutes before survival chances drop drastically, these dogs are an essential tool. Rooster, a veteran rescue dog, is retiring this season, marking the end of a dedicated career in avalanche safety.
