A large-scale UK study analyzing 2.2 million Veterinary records found that acute diarrhea affects about 1 in 12 dogs annually. Led by Dr. Dan O’Neill of the Royal Veterinary College, the research identified high-risk breeds such as Cavapoo, Maltese, Miniature Poodle, German Shepherd, Yorkshire Terrier, and Cockapoo, with Cavapoos showing nearly 15% annual incidence. Younger dogs (under 3) and seniors (over 9) were most vulnerable.
Common symptoms included vomiting (44%)loss of appetite (28%)lethargy (24%), and bloody stools (29%). Most cases were mild and resolved quickly with supportive care, mainly probiotics and dietary adjustments. However, antibiotics were prescribed in 38% of cases, often unnecessarily, raising concerns about overuse. The study challenges assumptions about “hybrid vigor” in designer breeds, showing higher risks in Cavapoos and Cockapoos. Ultimately, researchers urge owners to stay calm since most dogs recover within days and recommend responsible antibiotic use and attentive care for vulnerable dogs.
