The American Pet Products Association (APPA) announced that U.S. pet industry spending reached $152 billion in 2024, with projections of $157 billion for 2025. According to APPA’s 2025 State of the Industry Report, pet ownership continues to rise, with 94 million U.S. households now owning pets—up from 82 million in 2023. Growth is especially strong among Gen Z and Millennials, who are more likely to own multiple pets. Backyard chicken ownership also rose by 28%.
The report highlights affordability and access to Veterinary care as key concerns, with 37% of owners citing cost and appointment availability. Pet-friendly workplaces are increasing, and calming products are widely used, especially among younger pet owners. Gen Z is significantly influencing pet product trends, with social media driving their purchases. With 51% of pet owners shopping online and 47% in stores, retailers are encouraged to maintain a strong omnichannel presence to meet evolving consumer habits.
