The USDA will relocate approximately 2,600 Washington, D.C.–area employees to five regional hubs—Raleigh, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Fort Collins, and Salt Lake City—leaving no more than 2,000 staff in the capital. Announced by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, the move aims to bring the agency closer to its core constituents and reduce the federal government’s footprint. However, the decision, part of a broader reorganization effort under President Trump, has sparked criticism from lawmakers and employee unions.
Critics warn of increased attrition, inefficiency, and difficulties in hiring within smaller labor markets. The relocation includes vacating major USDA properties, such as the Beltsville Agricultural Research CenterThe Forest Service and other USDA divisions also face consolidations or closures. Lawmakers, including Senate and House Agriculture Committee leaders, expressed concern over not being consulted and called for hearings. Union leaders warn that further staff losses could jeopardize agency operations and public services.
