VCA Animal Hospitals is permanently closing at least 17 urgent care centers across five states, marking a shift from its previous expansion strategy. Originally launched in 2022, VCA’s urgent care centers aimed to provide same-day or next-day care for non-life-threatening conditions. However, closures in Texas, California, Colorado, Illinois, and Arizona suggest a reassessment of the business model.

A VCA spokesperson did not confirm specific closures but stated that the company continually evaluates its services based on market conditions and client demand. Despite the shutdowns, a few locations will remain open to refine patient care and client experience. VCA’s move contrasts with the growth of other urgent care providers like Bond VetPetMedic, and UrgentVet, which continue to expand nationwide. VCA, owned by Mars Inc., operates over 1,000 hospitals in the U.S. and Canada, making it one of the largest veterinary networks in the world.
