A growing outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) has led to the cancellation of the Uvalde Rodeo Qualifier, a key event for athletes seeking entry into the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Although no infected horses were present at the qualifier venue, organizers from the San Antonio Rodeo, WPRA, and PRCA agreed to cancel the event as a precaution to protect animal welfare. The outbreak is believed to be linked to the Nov. 5–9 WPRA World Finals and Elite Barrel Race in Waco, where several horses later showed symptoms.
Veterinarian Michael Martin described the virus as highly transmissible and potentially deadly, with cases already resulting in multiple horse deaths. EHV-1 spreads easily through direct contact, contaminated equipment, or human handling, and can cause severe respiratory or neurological illness. While the cancellation may impact February’s contestant pool, officials expect the main San Antonio Rodeo to proceed as planned while they continue monitoring the situation.
