Nearly 100 cats were rescued from a Woonsocket, Rhode Island apartment in one of the largest cases the Rhode Island SPCA has handled. Unlike typical hoarding situations, the owner contacted authorities for help. Dr. Dan Simpson said the cats were fortunate to be in relatively good condition, noting that in severe cases animals are often malnourished, diseased or deceased. He described the situation as a mental health issue and urged people who feel overwhelmed by too many pets to seek help before conditions worsen.
Simpson also encouraged community members to step in if they see someone struggling. The rescued cats are receiving vaccinations and medical care and are not yet available for adoption. With such a large influx, the RISPCA is asking for public support through donations and foster homes. Simpson hopes local shelters and residents will help provide temporary housing and resources to ensure the cats’ continued recovery and safety.
