Strom Thurmond Career & Technology Center (STCTC) has launched a new “Exploration of Veterinary Science and Animal Care” course, taught by Jessica Sharp-Miner, who joined the Edgefield County School District this year. The program introduces middle and high school students to Veterinary science through hands-on learning with animals ranging from cats and dogs to reptiles and birds, including the school’s new Sun Conure, “Chip.”
Supported by Superintendent Dr. Kevin O’Gorman, the initiative is part of a new Veterinary career pathway designed to prepare students for college dual-enrollment courses, industry certifications, and eventually veterinary technician training. The pathway aligns with the county’s first animal shelter and Clemson University’s upcoming Veterinary program, aiming to build strong partnerships and future opportunities. Sharp-Miner emphasizes responsibility and safety in class, moving students beyond “cute animal” interactions to serious scientific study. With her extensive background in animal care and passion for reptiles, she hopes to inspire a new generation of animal lovers and professionals.
