An international research team has discovered that domestic cats overwhelmingly prefer sleeping on their left side—revealed through analysis of 408 YouTube videos—suggesting this behavior offers an evolutionary survival benefit. Sleeping on their left side means waking cats immediately see the world through their left visual field, which is processed by the brain’s right hemisphere—optimized for detecting threats and coordinating rapid escape responses.
This bias toward left-side sleep may help cats detect danger faster upon waking, providing a crucial protective advantage during their 12–16 hours of daily rest. The study involved researchers from universities in Italy, Germany, Canada, Switzerland, and Turkey, and is published in Current Biology. The findings indicate that lateralized sleep position isn’t just a behavioral quirk, but a possible built-in adaptation for survival.
