Palm Beach County woman is warning pet owners after her two dogs contracted botulism from eating a dead iguana in their yard following a Florida cold snap. Bridget Garrison said her blue-tick hounds, Tally and Karma, consumed parts of the iguana, which likely froze and died during the cold weather. Days later, both dogs showed symptoms, including hind-limb paralysis. Veterinarians determined they had botulism, a toxin that can develop in decomposing animals.
There is no specific treatment for the condition. Tally died, while Karma survived but remains partially paralyzed and is recovering. Local veterinarian Dr. Evan Kadish explained that botulism cases can increase after cold snaps because frozen iguanas fall from trees and begin decomposing, creating toxic bacteria. Garrison said she was unaware of the danger and hopes others will learn from her experience. Experts advise pet owners to inspect yards for dead wildlife and safely remove carcasses to prevent similar tragedies.
