On a single day, the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) took in an extraordinary 267 animals, highlighting the growing strain on animal services in Southern California. Among the intakes were 96 guinea pigs surrendered by an overwhelmed owner in Escondido, quickly triaged by the SDHS Veterinary team, with several needing urgent care. In El Cajon, 50 chicks were received from the U.S. Postal Service after being abandoned by the purchaser who ordered them from Utah; the birds will be up for adoption in five days if unclaimed.
In addition, SDHS accepted 44 animals from overcrowded Los Angeles shelters and another 77 surrendered at its San Diego campuses. The organization is encouraging the public to consider fostering if adoption isn’t possible, emphasizing the ongoing need for community support to manage the high intake volume and ensure proper care for these animals.
